The KSh 50 billion project largely funded by foreign governments was said to have connected 3.6 million people to the national power grid when President Uhuru gave his state of the nation address at Parliament grounds last week but it seems the figures were cooked.

Apparently, pressure from President Uhuru and his deputy, William Ruto to connect one million new customers a year saw Kenya Power employees alter figures to meet their targets.

Internal communication by top management leaked to the media showed that they have been spending a lot of money to clean up the mess that has so far, refused to go away.

Of the 3.6 million figure President Uhuru quoted, about one million of the connections are fake or have never been topped up.

According to Weekend Business on Monday, March 20, KP powers have been activating meters without installing them, and including them among figures presented to the President.

Aside from the above reason, the cause for the cooked numbers is being attributed to the possibility that some meters are still lying idle in warehouses or giving clients meters and leaving them to install them on their own, then passing these numbers off to management.

Of the 3.6 million connected users in the Jubilee project, 940,668 people have non vending meters, meaning, their pre-paid meters are not in use.

The reason for this could be because of low electricity consumption or no installation but activation on the part of employees.

Eng Peter Mwichigi, General Manager, Customer Service at Kenya Power issued a statement saying they have begun procedures to take unspecified disciplinary actions against employees found culpable of this.

“The company has standard operating procedures, which our members of staff and contractors adhere to during all operations including meter installations. The procedures do not require customers to fix meters for themselves or seek services of private electricians to install meters,” said Mwichigi.
