A mysterious dawn fire has reportedly destroyed crucial files at the Busia county finance offices located a walking distance away from the county government's fire station.
The fire broke out at around 2am on Wednesday, September 25, and interestingly, only the finance department was affected.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the bizarre incident, Busia county deputy governor Moses Mulomi indicated the exact cause of the fire was not immediately clear and that investigation has been launched to establish whether it was a case of arson or just an accident and also extent of damage.
“Only the finance office was affected by the fire. We are still waiting for officials from the department to inform us on the severity of the fire and the documents that may have been destroyed,” he said.READ ALSO: Kenyatta University lecturer's PhD revoked for plagiarising Nigerian scholar
The county official further disclosed the finance office housed, among other documents, the county government's payroll system.
He added they had back up in place for all of the files and documents that were at the office and which may have been damaged.

A section of the residents were, however, not convinced the fire was an accident and suspected it could have been started by an official to cover up graft at the county government which was in 2018 thrust into the limelight over alleged corruption.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on September 10, 2018, directed eight Busia county MCAs to appear before it over claims they wanted to dilute evidence in a graft case against Governor Sospeter Ojaamong'.
The governor was arrested in July 2018 after the EACC established that at least KSh 8 million in taxpayers money had been plundered.
He was later released on bail together with other county officials even as investigations continued.
