However, on the other side of the celebrations, Mzee Sambu's mind was evidently not at peace when it dawned on him that he would soon be required to pay school fees for Kipkurui.

The family's need was so loud that the old man said he had to borrow a coat for the media interview when he learnt news reporters were on their way to his home.

Kipkurui scored 430 marks out of the possible 500 in the national exams to become the best candidate in Nandi county and seventh nationally.

Being a peasant family deep in the village, Sambu had never imagined at one point his son would be the talk on major national radios and television channels.

"I have nothing, totally nothing. The way you see today, I had to borrow this coat when I heard the press was coming to my home for this interview. I don't even have a single cent. I'm appealing to the government to come to the boy's rescue," he told NTV Kenya while wiping away tears.

Abiud's elder brother Cornelius Sang' who was available, said the candidate could forfeit his secondary school chance if the situation remains the same unless a miracle happens.

"You know we come from a very humble background. My father is jobless and he has no other source of come. No one knows where the family will be able to get money for Abiud's fees. My father left early in the morning to meet some politician over the matter," he exclusively told TUKO.co.ke.
