The new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, who has assumed office on Tuesday, will present his agenda for the bank on Thursday, the apex bank said in a press release.
In a brief handing-over ceremony at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, Emefiele took over the mantle of leadership from the former acting governor Sarah Alade.
Emefiele, who has become the 10th governor of the CBN, thanked Alade, other deputy governors present at the ceremony, and representatives of the media for gracing his assumption of the office.
The new governor is expected to have his first World Press Conference on June 5, where he will unveil his "agenda for the Central Bank of Nigeria and the people of Nigeria".
Emefiele's candidacy was proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan is February and approved by the Senate in March.
Emefiele has over 26 years banking experience and until his appointment was the Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc.
Meanwhile, the previous CBN chief Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has challenged his suspension by Jonathan in court. Sanusi, whose tenure expired in June, was suspended on February 20 over alleged financial wrongdoing, the claim he has denied.
The new CBN governor assumes duties when the Nigeria's banking sector finds itself in a period of declining confidence following the ugly face-off between the government and its immediate past leadership over the $49.8bn oil revenue controversy, Premium Times reports. The conflict seems to have negatively impacted the independence of the CBN.
Sarah Alade said that the current thrust of the concerns of the CBN management revolved around the need to sustain financial system stability and restore investors’ confidence in the country’s economy.
