The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday approved the granting of waivers to new members to contest party primaries ahead of the 2023 elections.
Naija News reports that without waivers new party members would have to wait for two years to be able to contest party primaries.
This known development was made known by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State while speaking to State House Correspondents after the NEC meeting in the company of Governors Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Hope Uzodinma (Imo), and Secretary of the CECPC, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe.
The NEC also condemned the call for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their allies.
The ruling APC asked opposition parties in the country and all stakeholders to join hands with the Buhari-federal government to tackle insecurity.
The NEC meeting which was held at the Presidential Villa had in attendance President Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman, Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee and Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni; governors and other party chieftains.
Speaking at the NEC meeting, President Buhari urged members of the ruling party to make sacrifices that will move the party forward.
The President said, “I want to appeal to all our party members and leaders at all levels, to try and make the required sacrifices so that we are able to collectively restore our progressive and democratic political party, which can nurture and give expression to our collective dream of building a strong, united and developed Nigeria.
“May I use this opportunity to remind all of us of the need to recreate our negotiation secret of 2012, 2013 under our legacy parties. What guided our success to achieve the merger that produced the APC was the respect we were able to have for each other.
“In those times, decisions reached at both formal and informal consultations were respected with trusted initiatives taken and believed that they were needed to produce the required political platform that could guarantee electoral victory.”
Naija News reports that the NEC also dissolved all party structures at wards, states and zonal levels.
