Biography: Fiorello La Guardia was a three-term mayor of New York City, serving from 1934 to 1945. La Guardia worked as a lawyer in New York, and served in the United States Congress before being elected mayor.
During his tenure La Guardia was hugely successful in rooting out corruption, improving public housing, and creating jobs. He was also instrumental in establishing the New York City Airport, which was eventually named after him.
La Guardia was also a strong advocate of civil rights, and worked to ensure that all New Yorkers had access to quality education and health care. After leaving office, La Guardia remained active in public life and served as director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.
